What Is Traffic-Cutting?
Traffic-cutting is the art of threading your car through moving highway traffic at triple-digit speeds without clipping a single vehicle. Ghost Driver spawns live AI traffic on its highways, so every run is a fresh puzzle of gaps, relative speeds, and reaction windows.
Unlike closed-circuit lap racing, your rewards come from clean, close passes — not from posting the fastest lap time. The closer and safer you slip past traffic, the longer your combo stays alive.
Why Ghost Driver Is Built for It
Live AI Traffic
Cars keep the highway unpredictable, so no two cuts are ever the same.
Anti-Lag Launches
2-Step Anti-Lag snaps you back to speed after every gap — see our Anti-Lag Guide.
Combo Economy
Clean near-misses feed your money combo — turn skill into cash in our Money Guide.
Step-by-Step Traffic-Cutting
Read the Flow
Scan two or three cars ahead and watch their relative speeds before you commit.
Build a Speed Base
Induction and weight reduction give you the surge to slip through gaps. See Tuning Math.
Launch with Anti-Lag
After a near-miss, the 2-Step Fuzz pop kills turbo lag so you accelerate instantly.
Time the Cut
Aim for the gap, not the car. Ease off the throttle if the window suddenly closes.
Chain the Streak
Each clean pass extends your combo — bank it at a safe moment to lock in the cash.
Best Setup for Traffic-Cutting
Handling always comes first. Weight Reduction Stage 1 is the cheapest agility win (about -8% chassis weight), and pairing it with Induction Stage 1 gives you the surge you need to slip gaps. Top-speed monsters are useless if you can't steer around a sedan.
Risk Management
Never overdrive your visibility. Lift early when a window looks tight, and practice the rhythm on slower roads first — our Beginner Handbook covers the safest way to build up to highway speed.

Reading traffic before you cut it
Cutting traffic is a reading skill before it is a driving skill. The cars ahead telegraph what they will do: a slow vehicle drifting toward a lane edge is usually about to change lanes, and a gap that looks inviting at distance often closes by the time you reach it because two vehicles are converging. Look two or three car lengths further down the road than the gap you are aiming for.
The other habit worth building is choosing a lane early. Weaving late forces a sharper input, and a sharp input is what turns a near-miss into a collision and resets your streak. If the middle lane is blocked, commit to the outside before the block arrives rather than trying to thread it at the last moment.
Watch: Escaping Police Chases

What this walkthrough covers
- Kenji frames the police-chase loop as an alternative money method: higher difficulty (more stars) pays more but is harder to escape — he recommends 3-star difficulty for most players and reserves the top tier for cars that both handle and accelerate well.
- Car choice is the core of the method. He prioritizes agile, all-wheel-drive cars (the Audi family, McLaren, Ferrari) and avoids heavy, tank-like SUVs (Trackhawk, Hellcat) that are hard to maneuver out of a pursuit.
- Escape technique: weave through live traffic at busy intersections or near accidents to break line-of-sight, keep the on-screen chase indicator in the safe (light) range, and never come to a full stop — the chase can't catch you while you keep moving.
- The "secret" he demonstrates is simply holding a high, steady speed and not crashing: a single collision nearly ends the run because the AI cops are aggressive on contact, so avoiding skids and impacts matters more than raw top speed.
- Reward structure: escaping pays a cash bonus plus a multiplier, and circling back to let the cops catch up can farm more per loop. The chase reappears periodically but is easy to shake once you keep distance without crashing.
